Keeping Your Glass Dining Table Looking Its Best

There are few things in the house that look better than a glass dining table. These tables are one of the best ways to give your home a sense of modern sophistication. Although they do look good, you can run into some problems if you aren’t very careful. Some people find that they accidentally damage their table soon after getting it, and have to live with scratches on the surface. Here are some tips to keep your table looking great for many years.

First of all, the most important thing to know is that you need to protect your table. Protection is a lot easier than fixing, so it is wise to learn a few things to save yourself a lot of headaches. One thing that you should do is always use place mats. They make a lot of sense because they provide a needed layer of protection between the glass surface and objects that can scratch it. In addition to place mats, you should always use a protective cloth between any pots and pans and the glass. This will protect it from heavy metal pans sliding around.

The next thing that you should do to protect your glass dining table is to keep children away from it. If you have young children, you know all too well that they love hitting the table with toys and other hard objects. If they do this enough times, you will quickly end up with a broken table. Do yourself a favor and keep the kids in high chairs until they are old enough to sit and eat at the table without damaging it. If young children are going to be sitting around the table, you can get a few rubber place mats to put in front of them. Doing so should prevent them from damaging the surface.

In the event that you do wind up with scratches on the surface of the glass, you might be able to fix it yourself. Take a close look and determine if the scratch is very deep or not. If it is just barely scratched, there is a good chance you can buff it with some toothpaste mixed with water. If the scratches look too deep or are widespread, you may have no choice but to replace the glass. Don’t worry, you don’t need to buy a whole new table. Take a look in the phone book and call some of your local glass companies. Give them the dimensions of the table (use a tape measure), and they should be able to give you a quote as to how much a replacement will cost right over the phone. A lot of times, replacing the glass will be cheaper than trying to have it replaced professionally.
